Mobile Notary Cost in Charlotte, NC: Fees and Mileage Explained

In North Carolina, the notary's fee is capped by law at $10 per principal signature for standard acts like acknowledgments and jurats (G.S. 10B-31). A mobile notary adds a travel fee — which North Carolina allows only when you agree to it in writing before the notary travels. So your total is the per-signature fee plus a distance-based travel fee, and you'll know it before I head your way.

"How much does a mobile notary cost?" is the first question most people ask, and it's a fair one. The good news is that North Carolina regulates the notary fee itself, so there are no surprises on that part. Here's exactly how the pricing works.

What North Carolina caps the notary fee at

North Carolina sets the maximum a notary may charge per notarial act in G.S. 10B-31. A notary cannot legally charge more than these amounts for the act itself:

  • $10 per principal signature — acknowledgments, jurats, verifications, and proofs (the everyday notarizations)
  • $10 per person — oaths or affirmations taken without a signature
  • $15 per principal signature — electronic (in-person) notarization
  • $25 per principal signature — remote online notarization

Most mobile appointments involve standard acknowledgments or jurats, so the notary fee is $10 for each signature that needs a seal. If three people each sign a document that must be notarized, that's three principal signatures.

The travel fee: how mobile pricing works

The convenience of a mobile notary is that I come to you — your home, office, hospital room, or a care facility. North Carolina specifically allows a notary to charge for that travel, but with an important protection for you: the travel reimbursement must be agreed to in writing, in advance, at the federal business mileage rate (G.S. 10B-31). In plain terms, you approve the travel cost before I drive anywhere — never a surprise afterward.

That's why every quote separates the two parts: the per-signature notary fee set by the state, and the travel fee based on the distance to your location. Your receipt itemizes them separately, too.

What affects your total

  • How many signatures need notarizing — $10 each under state law
  • How far I travel — the mileage-based travel fee to your location
  • Timing — same-day, after-hours, and weekend appointments may carry a higher travel/convenience fee for the scheduling
  • Document type — a multi-document estate or loan package simply has more signatures than a single form
